Foreword
The dazzling sights of spring bring life into nature and into
our city. A romantic atmosphere is everywhere, and even the
people on the streets seem to smile more. The reason for the
good mood is not only the spring air, but also an incredible
amount of holidays, both official and unofficial. Every year
the spring holiday parade starts with April's FooI'S Day. Kyiv
celebrates this day by joking and laughing along with the rest
of the world. |

Next comes Easter, Unusually, both denominations, Orthodox
and Catholic. The next holiday is a leftover from the Soviet
epoch, the International Day of Workers' Solidarity, May
1st. Victory Day, May 9th, will see thousands of people
go to the eternal flame and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier
to bring flowers and remember the heroes of World War II.
Then there is a new holiday for the Ukraine: Mothers Day
(May 13), and Europe Day (May 19). Then comes Kyiv Day (May
27), and Holy Trinity (May 27).
Several other reason to visit Kyiv at this time of the year
are the thousands of chestnut trees in bloom on the street
of the city, the magnificent collections of lilacs and magnolias
in the Botanical Garden, and the amazing Architectural Museum
Pyrohovo. The best time to visit this museum is on one of
the numerous holidays (such as Holy Trinity).
Cultural life this spring is enhanced with the French Cultural
Festival, and the annual Kyiv in May theatre festival. Laskavo
prosymo or welcome!
There are a number of churches in Kyiv more than a thousand
years old, such as St. Sophia. A lot of churches in the
city are over one hundred years old. There is also a few
which are less then ten years old. These newcomers however
are often real architectural gems. The St. Nicholas Church
is for example if the only church in Kyiv built on the water.
